Piera’s areas of expertise are dispute avoidance and complex national and international litigation. She also advises not-for-profit organisations, mainly in the field of public transport, and global professional service firms.
Piera started her multi-jurisdictional career as a successful litigation lawyer in 1999 with an international law firm in Basel. From 2008 to 2010 she practised with a City law firm in London. Her focus is complex, often transnational litigation before state courts and arbitral tribunals. Piera also acts as arbitrator. From 2011 to 2017 she was a judge on the Tax Appeals Commission of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. A former member of the board of directors of a large not-for-profit Verein, she has first-hand experience in governing Swiss Vereine and advises professional practices and professional service firms on governance, structuring and risk management issues.
Piera studied law at the universities of Basel (lic. iur. summa cum laude 1997, Dr. iur. summa cum laude 2000) and Cambridge (LL.M. first class degree 2003, St John’s College). She was admitted to the bar in 1999. In 2011 she obtained the STEP Advanced Certificate in Trust Disputes.
From 2001 to 2005 she was a part-time lecturer in private law at University of Basel and from 2005 to 2008 a fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation working at the Center for European Legal Studies, University of Cambridge, on a research project in comparative law (construction and interpretation of contracts). Piera is the author of a number of highly regarded publications.
